GPSR Risks in Textile Products: What 5 Real Safety Gate Cases Tell Us
For brands selling textile products into the EU, GPSR covers a broad surface — design, chemical content, age group, accessories, cords, flammability, labelling and traceability. Below we use five real Safety Gate cases to make what to watch out for concrete.
Case 1 — Children's Hoodie: Strangulation Risk
Long, free-ended cords near the neck created a strangulation hazard during play and climbing. The product violated EN 14682. Cord design — at the hood, waist and neck — must be evaluated against the target age group and the applicable standards at the design stage.
Case 2 — Children's Trousers: Injury Risk
Free-ended waist drawstrings could become entangled during the child's movement and cause injury. Both functional and decorative cords require a safety review during product design.
Case 3 — Leather Baby Shoes: Chromium-VI Contamination
Leather contained Chromium-VI above the permitted limit, which can cause skin sensitisation. A supplier declaration alone is not sufficient — laboratory testing must confirm compliance.
Case 4 — Balaclava / Face Mask: Carcinogenic Risk
Azo dyes released benzidine on degradation — genotoxic and carcinogenic. For darkly or heavily dyed textiles, REACH-relevant chemical compliance must be assessed carefully.
Case 5 — Children's Jacket: PFAS / PFOA Risk
The waterproof coating contained high levels of C9-C14 PFCA-related substances. These persistent compounds accumulate in the environment and the human body; new EU rules impose specific restrictions.
Practical Compliance Checklist
- Correct category: what age group and use case?
- Cord safety in children's items: EN 14682 and related standards.
- Chemical tests: azo dyes, Chromium-VI, PFAS, heavy metals.
- Documenting product claims: “antibacterial”, “organic”, “waterproof” must be evidenced.
- Labelling and traceability: manufacturer, model, batch, protection class.
- Online listing completeness: Article 19 visibility requirements.
GPSR compliance is not just paperwork — it's a safety review of design, accessories, chemistry and labelling, end to end.
